Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia

Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia

Asia Pacific Map by Google Maps

Asia and Australia are very important to each other for many things.  Australia engages with Asia on the same time zone so business connections are easily maintained.  Australia and Asia are neighbours geographically.
Asia literate Australians will gain substantial personal and social benefits; be better equipped to make sense of the world they live in, and make an important contribution to building the social, intellectual and creative capital of our nation ("Home | ACARA", n.d., p. 13).
Matthew 22:39  tells us to Love your neighbour as yourself.’ ("Word in Life Bible Contempory English Version", 1998).  This is evident in the way the Australian Government's overseas aid program is improving the lives of millions of people in developing countries. Australia is working with the governments and people of developing countries to deliver aid where it is most needed and most effective.   Australian aid has helped our neighbors and countries further abroad to develop, and our aid program continues to grow. “For example, Australian aid has wiped out polio from the Pacific. Australian aid has seen more than 1.5 million children immunized against measles and polio in Papua New Guinea.” ("About Australia's aid program", n.d., p. 2)

“Students can investigate and explore Asian places, and learn about the ways in which
Australia and Asia are interconnected. A geographical perspective enables students to
study Asia as an important region of the world, as individual countries, as regions within
countries, and at the local level.  In particular, geography enables students to learn about
the diversity between and within the countries of Asia, and helps to counter stereotypes
and to foster intercultural understanding. By examining the characteristics of Asian places
on these different scales, a study of geography leads to a growing understanding of the
varied environments, peoples, economies and cultures of Australia’s neighbours. By
investigating Asian perceptions of the world, students can learn to see that world in different
          ways” ("Home | ACARA", n.d., p. 13).

Sustainibity

Sustainability

“Sustainability addresses the ongoing capacity of Earth to maintain all life” ("Home | ACARA", n.d., p. 12).  Sustainability is creating a world where everyone can live full lives and enjoy a rich level of well-being within the limits of what nature can provide.  It is also taking the long-term view of how our actions affect future generations, and insuring we don't deplete resources, or cause pollution at rates faster than the earth is able to renew itself.  We need to look after the world God created and entrusted into our care, but our technological world needs power.  Getting the balance right is what we need to teach our children to do.  Sustainability needs to be taken up on an individual level as well as a Global level.

  But this could happen too

On an individual level we can learn a lot from our ancestors who were entirely self-sufficient.  They had only small power needs compared to today.  If environmentally friendly power options are employed, for example solar or wind, far less damage to the environment is done rather than burning coal.  The humble vegetable garden is making a comeback for many reasons; water tanks are now in most homes.  These small steps are a beginning to care for a world, and in time may begin to reverse the damage we have done.  To teach sustainability resources could be helpful.

“Students learn not only about the environmental processes involved in deforestation and land degradation, but investigate their demographic, social, economic and political causes and consequences. Students are consequently able to evaluate the policies adopted or proposed in response to such problems against the criteria of environmental integrity, economic viability and social justice, as well as to think about actions that they can take themselves. A geographical perspective also leads to conclusions about how and why approaches towards sustainability vary from place to place.” ("Home | ACARA", n.d., p. 12).

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures

It is important to integrate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures into all aspects of learning; they have been left out for far too long.  ACARA adds the cross curricular priorities with regard to geography.  This is split into six sub-categories for this first topic.  One great way to begin would be to compare the “Aboriginal Creation” and the Christian beliefs of creation, for example Gen 2:15 says “And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the Garden of Eden to dress it and keep it” (NIV) ("Word in Life Bible Contempory English Version", 1998).

It is easily integrated when you consider the spiritual significance to the land that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have.  Their connection to the land is different to ours.  Theirs is a “more spiritual, physical, social and cultural connection” ("Meaning of land to Aboriginal people - Creative Spirits", n.d., p. 1).The following link is a site that can easily be used to explain this:  Meaning of the land

Aboriginal spiritual beliefs are invariably about the land Aboriginal people live on. It is ‘geosophical’ (earth-centered) and not ‘theosophical’ (God-centered) ("What is Aboriginal spirituality? - Creative Spirits", n.d., p.1) The following link:  Spiritual connection to land can be used to enhance your explanations of this.  Another easy was to engage your students on this topic would be by the use of images.

“The principles of caring for Country, caring for each other and respecting the systems embedded in the concepts of Country and Place, People, Culture and Identity, provides opportunities for learners to understand the histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples before settlement and investigate the shared histories and resulting relationships since settlement. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students it provides an opportunity to see themselves within the curriculum in an education setting that respects and promotes their cultural identities and heritage” ("Home | ACARA", n.d., p. 11).
